From Newsletter to Blog

Hello everyone,

Due to the nature of the internet beast, and to the fact that nearly nobody received our newsletter in their inbox anymore, we have decided to replace our monthly newsletter by this blog.

It has the big advantage that it can be updated as soon as fresh news is available, rather then having to wait until the newsletter is published.

For all of you who did get our newsletter in your inbox, we hope this is not too much of an inconvenience.

We would like to try this for a couple of months to see what happens. We can always go back to the newsletters by popular request !

Enjoy the reading,
Chris

NEWSLETTER 2

Welcome • New ArtistsArtist NewsNew MediaOpen Doors Comments

WELCOME

Another month has flown by and lots of new creative works have been realised.

This newsletter is a bit shorter than the previous one as everyone is preparing for Open Doors and Arts Festivals and live has become a little more hectic.

Due to some gremlin in our computer we lost our fact sheets so we apologise for not having one for you this time around. We will make up for that next month !

Emma Varga Masterclass 3-7 July 2007

Her work is captivating, mysterious and technically brilliant. International glass artist, Emma Varga, will be teaching a Masterclass in her unique “Aquarelle” method of kiln casting at the Exemplar Glass studio in Leominster from 3-7 July 2007. There will be places for 6 students to participate in this workshop – a rare opportunity to work with Ms Varga whose inspiration comes from the landscapes and oceans of her adopted country, Australia.

After graduating from the University of Applied Arts in Belgrade (Yugoslavia), she developed her skills during 15 years work in a glass factory, enabling her to design and make her own glass works in addition to the production lines needed for the factory. In the early 1990s during the first years of the war in Yugoslavia the colour red began to feature in her work as a symbol of all that was dangerous and threatening in the world. Varga decided to use her art as a force for positive growth, changing the red of fire, destruction and blood to a red of richness and creativity, recalling her memories of the medieval towers of Dubrovnik, a golden noble red, and later, in Australia to the collection of “red sunsets” and eventually as a representation of bush fires, an ever present danger in her new environment.

In 2004, some years after her emigration to Australia, a new project emerged, the “Something Different Creative Laboratory”, a series of workshops and exhibitions bringing together glass artists in different parts of the world. After its start in Budapest, within a few months the project was spread over three continents, forging closer contacts between glass artists in Australia and Eastern Europe.

Varga works with sheet glass, as many as 100 to 200 hundred layers, with glass mosaic elements and coloured frits precisely arranged on the sheets. The whole assemblage is fused and cast through various stages, then ground and polished to reveal clarity of colour in the patterning of the three-dimensional, wave-like forms.
Details of her work can be seen at
